Smokeless, chewing and dipping tobacco are actually all names for the same exact thing, smokeless. However, smokeless tobacco basically describes a number of different methods that tobacco can be used other than smoking it.

There are a number of ways tobacco can be used rather than smoking it. This article will provide some of the methods of smokeless tobacco, along with some other pertinent details as well.

A History of Smokeless Tobacco:

Smokeless tobacco has been one of the oldest ways of consuming tobacco, and was probably one of the first ways. The native Indians in both North and South America chewed tobacco and used it for medicine. During the 20th century, chewing tobacco began to grow in popularity among many in the US. It then began to become even more popular among the younger generation, especially when it was seen being used by professional baseball players.

Chewing tobacco plain is not really considered a pleasant experience. All of the smokeless tobacco manufacturers within the United States add other ingredients into the chew to make it a more pleasurable, yet a highly addictive product. These ingredients include:

  • Sweeteners and flavorings — Just like chewing gum has a sweet and favorable taste, smokeless tobacco also has a wide host of flavorings to help make the chew more favorable. Some common flavors of chewing tobacco include wintergreen and classic.
  • Salt — to contrast the sweetness, just like in cooking, salt is added to the tobacco
  • Other harmful chemicals — there are extremely harmful chemicals placed into smokeless tobacco that are very dangerous, a few include Polonium 210, Arsenic, and Cyanide.
  • A list of stuff as long as your arm, that you wouldnt want to put into your mouth if you knew what it was. Every company that makes this stuff puts different things in it, but none of it is good for you.

Types of smokeless tobacco:

There are many different types of smokeless, they include:

  • Plug — this is a form of loose leaf tobacco, however it is condensed with a binding sweetener
  • Loose leaf — This is another common type of chewing tobacco, also called scrap
  • Snuff or Moist Tobacco — This is a finely chopped form of tobacco, which is the most popular.
  • Long cut — long cut is still a tobacco chew, but is cut into longer pieces than snuff.
  • Snus — Snus is similar to chewing, however it is made so you don’t have to spit. It also sometimes comes in pouches.

Smokeless tobacco describes a wide number of different ways one can be use tobacco over smoking it. Please note that while some risks may not be associated with smokeless tobacco that are with smoking it, such as emphysema and lung cancer. There are still risks associated with it, and it can kill you.
